We get it—summer is in full swing, the popsicles have been eaten, the splash pad has lost its magic, and you’ve checked off every last item on your summer bucket list. Now what?
If your toddler is getting restless and you’re craving meaningful ways to spend time together, that also supports language development, you’re in the right place. These easy, engaging summer activities for toddlers use things you likely already have at home (hello, magnetic tiles and puzzles!) and will turn even the slowest summer days into language-filled adventures.

1. Magnify the Fun with Magnetic Tiles
You probably already know that magnetic tiles are great for creativity—but did you know they can also spark some amazing conversations?
Stick ‘Em to the Garage Door:
Take the tiles outside and let your toddler build right on the garage door. The vertical surface is great for coordination and changes their perspective—literally!
Narrate their building: “You made a blue square. Let’s add a triangle roof!”

Build a House for the Animals:
Grab some stuffed animals or figurines and build homes or zoos.
Ask questions like: “Where will the dog sleep?” or “Should we make a tall tower or a wide house?” This helps your child connect words with objects and ideas.

Create a Race Track:
Use the tiles to build long paths or ramps for cars and balls.
Practice turn-taking and descriptive language: “Ready, set, go!” “That car is FAST!” “Let’s try the red one next.”

2. Puzzle Play – With a Twist
Puzzles are already great for vocabulary-building and problem-solving, but let’s turn up the movement and mystery!
The Stair Challenge:
Put all the puzzle pieces in a basket at the top of the stairs (or across the room, if you don’t have stairs). Your child has to run to grab one piece at a time and bring it back to build the puzzle with you.
Use specific language as they return: “You found the corner piece!” “This one has part of the giraffe on it!”

Puzzle Piece Surprise:
Wrap individual puzzle pieces in paper or tin foil and let your child unwrap them like gifts.
As they open each one, talk about what they see: “Ooo! This one has stripes. I wonder where it goes?”

Sensory Search:
Hide puzzle pieces in a bin of rice, pasta or dry beans and let your child dig for them.
This is a fun way to add sensory play while practicing vocabulary: “You found a piece with a tail!” “Let’s see if it fits!”

3. Spray Bottle Play: Great for Language & Laughs on a Hot Day
Spray bottles are the unsung hero of summer toddler play. They’re cheap, easy to use, and give kids a sense of independence—all while offering tons of opportunities for language-rich moments.
Water the Plants:
Give your child a spray bottle and let them “help” in the garden or on the patio.
Talk about each plant as you water: “This is a sunflower. Let’s give it a drink!” “You’re spraying the leaves. Do they look happy?”

Wash Away Sidewalk Chalk:
Draw with chalk first, then turn your spray bottle into a magic eraser! This is great cause and effect play.
Narrate what’s happening: “Look! The blue is disappearing!” “Spray the circle. Now it’s gone!”

Give the Animals a Bath:
Set out plastic animal toys or cars and let your toddler spray them clean. Add a small tub of soapy water and a cloth for extra fun.
Use descriptive phrases like: “You’re washing the muddy pig!” “That zebra is sparkling clean now.”
These types of activities support vocabulary like action words (spray, wash, squeeze), color names, and object identification—all while keeping your toddler engaged.
